"I bought this pedal from Replay a year before I worked here, and took it home for a long series of recording tests. Knowing full well the heavy pedigree of the Orange Amps tone stack, I still wanted to try to coax some relatively clean, vintage sounds out of it. Though I wouldn't recommend the Bax Bangeetar for anyone wanting crystalline or sterile cleans, it proved to have very musical, usable clean-to-slightly-overdriven gain on tap – lower on the Gain knob, before the ranges of saturation that this pedal is really built for. That's amazing, because that means one box can cover my normal, vintage-minded moods AND my crushingly heavy ones.
The real icing on the cake is the Baxandall EQ with full parametric mids. The Top and Bottom controls are musical and responsive, but that sweepable mid boost with adjustable Q is the true sweetness. I was able to boost or carve away frequencies at will, from mild to very wild, which had either corrective or creative benefits depending on mood. Sweeping those mids (sometimes boosted, sometimes cut) while playing different clean and heavy riffs yielded powerful results, basically unlocking a continuum of custom sounds tailored to my tastes – yet also preserving my guitars' unique tones AND keeping noise to a minimum. It must be noted that the sound quality here, on any setting, is stellar.
I also found the cab simulator to be a huge help – indeed, it was one of the selling points of the pedal for me. When I experimented with all types of tones and gain levels for different styles – from traditional surf to Fifties rockabilly to roots reggae to classic metal to creeping, existential sludge – I got a good sense of hearing a miked 4x12 cab that responded to my tonal tweaks.
Most people aren't going to buy this pedal hoping for it to SURF, but I tried it – and the ability to finely tune the mids to accentuate the spring reverb drip is invaluable to me. It's just one example of the Swiss Army-level tonal utility that this pedal offers.
From unexpected mildness to severe 'is-my-amp-on-fire?' saturation, to the ability to sculpt tones on guitar AND bass, The Bax Bangeetar is a winner for me."
